(8 5/8 x 6 1/8 x 1 3/16in.), A JEWELLED BINDING WITH 170 JEWELS, dark green levant morocco, upper cover with double gilt fillet border around a broad panel border of stippled gold leaf onlaid with a climbing acanthus design in green and light green morocco gilt, SET WITH 8 GARNETS, cornerpiece ornaments of onlaid blue morocco densely gilt-tooled with dots and leaves, SET WITH 52 GARNETS AND 44 PEARLS, a large recessed central pointed oval panel framed with an onlaid strip of blue-gray morocco, the panel containing a climbing rose ornament in onlaid green, light green and two shades of red onlaid and moulded morocco on a stippled gold leaf ground SET WITH 16 OPALS, an oval centerpiece of blue-gray morocco in relief with a crowned shield decoration framed in onlaid black morocco around the name Ida inlaid in mother-of-pearl on a stippled gold leaf ground SET WITH 11 GARNETS AND 7 PEARLS; lower cover with interwoven strapwork borders of onlaid green, brown and purple morocco, a large rectangular panel of swirling small leaf and flower tendrils of onlaid green and red morocco in a densely gilt-dotted ground, a central recessed pointed oval panel containing a CENTRAL GREEN TOURMALINE SUPPORTED BY 4 MOONSTONES, 4 MOTHER-OF-PEARL HEARTS, 4 GARNETS AND 6 CHRYSOPRASE; spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered on green labels in two compartments, a repeated ornament of crown, leaves and four onlaid red morocco rose flowers in the rest; board edges with single gilt fillet; doublures framed with onlaid brown morocco strap around a broad panel border of leaf sprays with onlaid red morocco buds against a densely gilt-dotted ground, framing a large rectangular panel of white morocco, the upper panel with a background of leaf sprays with onlaid blue morocco buds emanating from a lyre beneath a large central shield of blue morocco, diapered in gilt and bearing the monogram AT in onlaid dark blue and brown morocco, the lower panel with a gilt-lettered quotation from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream ("The Poet's eye..."); free endpages of white morocco with a gilt border of flower and leaf tools: incorporating cherub in heart-shaped corner ornament; white silk linings; edges gilt and gauffred with red rose and triple green leaf ornament, stamp-signed with the intertwined S&S cypher on upper doublure and "Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London" on lower doublure, purple morocco gilt and velvet-lined folding case (wear at extremities of case). Some leaves foxed . 26 wood-engraved illustrations by Dalziel, Green, Thomas and E.
