First edition of Joachim von Sandrart's Teutsche Academie, a significant collection of works on art history and theory, antiquities, and artists' biography, including a biography of Sandrart himself. Sandrart (1606-1688) was and artist and printmaker from Frankfurt but travelled widely in Italy and settled in Nuremberg in 1674. This collection of works includes texts by him as well as translations, and like Vasari, his fame rests more on this lavish publication than on his art works.
7 volumes, folio (245 x 380-389 mm).
binding: Eighteenth-century French red morocco gilt (ca 400 x 255 mm), gilt turn-ins, edges gilt, marbled end-papers. (A few small scrapes to covers, bindings slightly rubbed particularly at edges of spine bands, some spine ends frayed.)
