.44-40 caliber, 26" barrel, S/N 83272 (S.F.P. 172) (mfg. ca 1898). Blued finish, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock with crescent buttplate and smooth forend. Two-line barrel mark reads: COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED MAY 29, SEPT. 18, 83. MAY 22, 85. JUNE 26, 86. FEB. 22, 87. and marked .44 CAL. in front of receiver. Elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, German silver Rocky Mountain sight blade. Triggerguard tang marked S. F. P. 172. One of approximately 401 Colt Lightning rifles acquired by the San Francisco Police Department ca 1898. Condition: Very good. Retains some streaky thinning blue on the barrel, magazine tube and frame, mixed with a plum brown patina. Metal with clear markings, some lightly scattered surface oxidation and some moderate pitting on the buttplate tang. Mechanically functional, very good bore is mostly bright with some scattered oxidation and light pitting mostly near the muzzle. Stock showing wear and numerous bumps and dings from storage, handling and use and a couple of tiny chips at the frame junction.
