27 x 37.5cm (10 5/8 x 14 3/4in).Footnotes Provenance
Sir John Roberts gifted by the artist, thence by decent to the current owner.
In January 1912, Birch stayed in Wengen a popular ski resort in the Swiss Alps south of Interlaken for a painting holiday with Benjamin Leader and his wife Belle. John Roberts a Scottish cloth maker noted that Birch was staying in the area and invited him to join him in his hotel. Birch sold a few mountain sketches to Roberts who helped Birch when he could by buying his works. During Roberts stay in Wengen he took a large number of photographs which he sent to Birch to help him finish some works that he started when he stayed in the Swiss Alps. These photographs helped Birch complete a large canvas called 'Wengen Heights'. This work was exhibited at the Royal Academy. John Roberts invited Birch to stay with him in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders for a fishing trip. As inscribed on the back, it is believed that this work was gifted to him after their stay in Switzerland when he went to stay with him.Saleroom noticesPlease note this lot is subject to Artists Resale Right
