Samuel F. B. Morse American, 1791-1872 The Holy Family at Night Oil on canvas 7 1/4 x 9 5/8 inches Provenance: Lida Fleitman Bloodgood, Rome, until 1960 Exhibited: Stony Brook, New York, The Long Island Museum, More Than Mount , Sept. 14, 1996 - Mar. 30, 1997 Stony Brook, New York, The Long Island Museum, Artists Abroad , Mar. 19 - Aug. 2, 2021 This work is a near copy, in a reverse sense, of a painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, long thought to be by Rembrandt, but now generally agreed to be by an artist from Rembrandt's circle. Morse's direct inspiration was most likely an etching after that composition (also in a reverse sense) by the French artist Baron Dominque Vivant Denon (1747-1825). C Property from a Prominent New York Museum
Inpainting at the edges including a significant area of restoration in the lower right corner. There are a couple of other spot of inpainting in the shadows of the background. The figures seem to be free of inpainting. The work has a thick layer of varnish.
