(Samuel, American painter and inventor, creator of the electric telegraph, 1791-1872) Autograph Letter signed to Gilbert Rodman at the Treasury Department, 1p. with conjugate blank and address panel and red wax seal, sm. 4to, Washington, 16th April 1844, apologising for not having replied sooner, "respecting the communication from the Chairman of the Com.tee of Claims of the Senate, on the claim of Levi S. Bartlett. I called as you suggested... and my explanation was perfectly satisfactory to him..."; and 2 others, comprising, another ALs from Morse and a manuscript report by Gilbert Rodman detailing the claims of Bartlett against Morse over complications in constructing an experimental telegraph line between Baltimore and Washington DC., folds, browned (3). *** Bartlett had been contracted by Morse to help build an experiment telegraph by using underground cables. Owing to certain problems Morse decided to scrap the plan and instead suspend the telegraph by overhead cables, thereby rendering the contract with Bartlett void. Bartlett appealed to the Senate committee for compensation.
