It was painted in 1941, when Dali was mid-career and writing his semi-autobiography 'The Secret Life of Salvador Dali'. Keeping the facial features of the original magazine cover, Dali metamorphosed the portrait into a coastal landscape using overpainting techniques. The title translates to 'Mysterious Mouth Appearing Behind My Nurse's Back'. Alluding to his childhood memories, the painting depicts Dali himself as a boy, with his nurse Llucia on a Catalonian beach.
