SALMON, William. Botanologia. The English Herbal: or, History of Plants . London: I. Dawkes for H. Rhodes and J. Taylor, 1710[-11]. 2 o (380 x 240 mm). Title printed in red and black, engraved additional title by Michael van der Gucht after Eloas Knight, over 1000 woodcuts within text. (Occasional browning, few other minor stains, some short tears twice affecting text in index leaves 8D1 and 8E2.) Contemporary calf (worn, front cover detached). Provenance : Mrs. Brown (gift inscription on title page dated 1833). FIRST EDITION of the last English woodcut herbal. In some copies there is an additional engraved section title and an "Index morborum," both lacking in this copy, not called for in the collation by Johnston in Cleveland Collections . William Salmon is generally regarded as a charlatan, the M.D. affixed to his name on the title most likely being an affectation. Contemporary scientists objected to this herbal's inaccuracy, but it still met with popular success for its copious illustrations and remedies. Cleveland Collections 325; Henrey 1308; Hunt 426; Nissen BBI (Supplement) 1720n; Pritzel 8018.
