SALINGER, Jerome D. (b.1919). The Catcher in the Rye . Boston: Little Brown & Company, 1951.
SALINGER, Jerome D. (b.1919). The Catcher in the Rye . Boston: Little Brown & Company, 1951. 8 o . Original black cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; pictorial dust jacket (a few tiny nicks at corners, pencil mark on jacket). Provenance : Mary Godard Hadley (signature on front pastedown). FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK, with the author's photo on rear panel of dust jacket, later suppressed. A fine copy of an iconic, twentieth-century American novel, first published in 1951, and still a best-seller today. Salinger's masterpiece brilliantly captures the postwar mood of uneasiness, particularly among young people. Holden Caufield's rage at the "phoniness" of the adult world presaged the wide-spread disenchantment and hostility towards authority that would only grow among young Americans over the course of the 1950s and 1960s. This copy has the first state of the rare dust jacket showing the author's photo, which the publicity-adverse Salinger ordered his publishers to suppress in later printings. A fine, rare example of this American classic.
