Saint-Non's work "was the first work of its type to appear in France and it created a vogue for the 'voyage pittoresque'" (Blackmer). The author travelled extensively in Italy for this work during 1759-1761, in the company of Fragonard and Hubert Robert Saint-Non also arranged for Vivant Denon who was at the time living in Naples, to engage artists to provide drawings of important scenes not seen by the Saint-Non himself. Publication was by subscription in fascicules, but Saint-Non ruined himself in producing "one of the monuments of French 18th century book-production".
The present copy is one of the early issues, with plates 84, 85, 87 & 88 in volume 3 marked as 24, 11, 13 & 24bis. It contains the scarce plate of priapic bronzes in volume 2 (supposedly suppressed by the King of Naples).
