Type: 5:82R (text); 10:65G and 24bis:55G (legends on diagrams). First paragraph (seven lines) on A2r printed in red. 12- and 6-line woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device, two full-page woodcuts (Astronomia, Urania and Ptolemy on A1v and an armillary sphere on A4v), numerous woodcut diagrams (eight printed in colors: seven in black and either ochre or red, one in black, red and ochre). (Some minor ink staining.) 19th-century vellum. Provenance : contemporary annotations in a miniscule hand (some in the Sacrobosco text trimmed by binder); W.M. Grimshaw (signature on front pastedown); Robert Honeyman (his sale part VI, Sotheby's London, 11 November 1980, lot 2721). An early edition with color-printed illustrations. Based on Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators, Sacrobosco's treatise was the fundamental astronomical text of the late middle ages, and was taught in all the schools of Europe until well into the 16th-century. The illustrations are early examples of stencil coloring in more than one color. Sacrobosco's popular Sphaera mundi is accompanied by Georgius Peurbach, Theoricae novae planetarum and Regiomantanus, Disputationes contra Cremonensia . Gothic types: 9:130 title; 7:92 verses on 1r and headings of diagrams; 4:76 text; 7:63 capitals in diagrams on 30v; 6:61 names of months in table on 19r. Printed tables, 40 small woodcuts of solar and lunar eclipses printed in red and black, woodcut initials, the 2 sheets of the last quire (containing 4 full-page diagrams) pasted together to form 2 stiff leaves, with the brass pointer on the last diagram (but lacking the two volvelles on the second diagram). (Some browning and staining.) Reprinted from Ratdolt's Venetian edition of 1485, with the omission of obsolete matter, and some changes of arrangement.
