Beschreibung:

340 pp. 21 tissue covered plates, fold out map towards the rear. (8vo) red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper, an appreciative presentation inscription to a librarian whose assistance the author valued. Includes 8 original photographs with notations in ink by the author, either laid in or tipped in between various pages towards the back half of the book. They are located so the images correspond with the material on those specific pages. The backs of some of the photos have page numbers written in pencil where they are to be placed, and some have stamped in blue ink "Grace Raymond Hebard Laramie, Wyoming." "This biography of Sacajawea was controversial because of the contention by the author that the Shoshone woman who accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition lived for many years after her supposed death. Thus only small editions were issued over the years." (Clark & Brunet). Howes H383; Clark & Brunet 117.
