RYUICHI YAMASHIRO (1920- ) 2ND INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL EXHIBITION OF PRINTS IN TOKYO. 1960. 40 1/4x28 1/2 inches, 102 1/4x72 1/2 cm. Condition B+: minor loss at upper left edge; minor tears at edges; creases and abrasions in margins and image; paper remnants and label on verso; pin holes in corners. Silkscreen. Paper. Yamashiro was one of the pioneers of modern Japanese graphic design, working for the Japanese Pavilion of the 1958 Brussels World Fair and for major companies like Asahi and Toshiba. He also served as director of the Nippon Design Center. He designed his most famous poster, Hayashi-Mori , for the Forest Protection Movement in 1964. This poster for the 2nd Biennal incorporates classic Japanese woodblock style, specifically referencing Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa , echoed by modern, colorful geometric forms.
