RUSSIAN NORTHERN SEA ROUTE – GROZA, I.R. and DUBENSKII, P.S. (eds). Slavnym zaboevateliam Arktiki . [To the Glorious Conquerors of the Arctic.] Moscow: OGIZ-SOTSEKGIZ, 1934. The first edition. Much of the work is devoted to profiles of various Soviet heroes and figures connected to the rescue of S.S. Cheliuskin . Despite a large print run this title is rare in commerce and in public institutions: WorldCat locates just four copies outside of Russia. Published on the eve of Stalin’s great purge, it is likely that the edition was suppressed following the disgrace of various contributors and subjects: for example Iosef Unshlikht, the notorious Chekist, who contributed the very first article in this collection and was executed in 1938. Octavo (210 x 145mm). Portrait frontispiece of Stalin; illustrations throughout, mainly halftone photographic reproductions (occasional light wear). Original color illustrated wrappers, designed by N.M. Lobanov (spine ends chipped; light wear). Provenance : Russian title signature – Wayfarer’s Bookshop.
