RUEFF, Jacob. De conceptu et generatione hominis: de matrice et eius partibus, nec non de conditione infantis in utero ... , Frankfurt am Main: [Georg Corvinus for Sigismund Feyerabend, 1580]. Small 4, woodcut title vignette showing a birthing room, numerous woodcut illustrations, a few full-page (lacking C2 and G4, some minor mainly marginal waterstaining), 17th-century panelled calf with single stamp at corners (lightly worn), bookplate of Sir David Salomons, Turnbridge Wells. De conceptu et generatione hominis is one of the most popular works on obstetrics in the 16th century. The importance of this work lies in its illustrations, which include reproductive organs, surgical instruments, birth deformities or abnormalities, etc. "Of greater interest, however, is the series of seven woodcuts illustrating contemporary ideas of mammalian embryology, which provide a unique and valuable insight into how early writers envisioned the process of embryonic development" (Norman). Adams R867; Durling 3981; Norman 1856 (1554 edition).
