Currey was appointed Lieutenant in the armoured cruiser Aboukir of the Third Cruiser Squadron, then operating in the Mediterranean, as Lieutenant on 1 March, 1907; promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911; appointed executive officer to the Formidable, then part of the Second Fleet on 2 January, 1912; executive officer on the dreadnought HMS Marlborough on 30 May, 1914, served in her in this capacity at the Battle of Jutland. Burney cited his "untiring energy and skilful work" in helping to save the ship after being torpedoed; promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916; promoted the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1928.
