ROWLANDSON, Thomas, illustrator -- COMBE, William (1741-1823). English Dance of Death in twenty-four monthly numbers from the designs of Thomas Rowlandson London: J. Diggens at R. Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, 1814-1816.
ROWLANDSON, Thomas, illustrator -- COMBE, William (1741-1823). English Dance of Death in twenty-four monthly numbers from the designs of Thomas Rowlandson London: J. Diggens at R. Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, 1814-1816. 24 original parts in 2 volumes, 8° (253 x 167mm). 72 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Rowlandson, printed title in part I, printed title of first edition in book form dated 1815 in part XII, hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and engraved title of vol. I and printed title of vol. II of first edition in book form in part XXIV. (Light offsetting from plates throughout, first two text leaves in pt. III with clean marginal tear, stitching in pt.XI broken causing leaves and plates to detach, a few leaves very lightly browned.) Original printed wrappers, uncut (faded and browned, also a little soiled); two red morocco clamshell boxes, gilt spine compartments, triple gilt fillet on sides (one inner case scuffed). Provenance : Hemsworth Club (manuscript inscription on most front wrappers) – purchased from Parke-Bernet, 15 April 1946. RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. For Tooley this work is ‘one of the essential pivots of any colour plate Library.’ Ray considers it 'the perfect complement' to Rowlandson's Microcosm of London since 'here the artist is concerned for the most part not with crowds, but with scenes of violent action or intense emotion drawn from private life. Far from seeming repetitious, the figure of King Death provides a sardonic presence which adds immensely to the scenes he stage manages.' Abbey Life 263; Ray 35; Tooley 411.
