Georges Rouaults "Père Ubu"-Darstellungen entstanden in Anlehnung an das erschienene, satirische Theaterstück "Ubu Roi" von Alfred Jarry das von einem machtgierigen Tyrannen handelt, dessen Charakterzüge als Metapher für den modernen, erfolgsverwöhnten Mann zu verstehen sind. Begeistert von dem Stück, nutzte der französische Verleger und Kunsthändler Ambroise Vollard Jarrys Werk als Basis für eigene Fortsetzungen, die ihn über ganze drei Jahrzehnte hinweg beschäftigen sollten. Für seine Arbeit an den "Réincarnations du Père Ubu" beauftragte er Georges Rouault mit der Illustrierung. Der Künstler arbeitete zwischen und an diversen Holzschnitten und Radierungen, die er nach Zeichnungen und Aquarellen anfertigte. Label on verso: Kunstmuseum Luzern, 1945/1950, no. KH367. Georges Rouault's "Père Ubu" paintings were based on the satirical play "Ubu Roi" by Alfred Jarry published in 1896, about a greedy tyrant whose character traits are to be understood as a metaphor for the modern man who is spoiled by success. Inspired by the play, the French publisher and art dealer Ambroise Vollard used Jarry's work as the basis for his own sequels, which he would continue to work on for a full three decades. For his creation of the "Réincarnations du Père Ubu," he commissioned Georges Rouault to illustrate the work. Between and 1928, the artist worked on various woodcuts and etchings, which he modeled after drawings and watercolors.
