ROSSINI, Luigi (1790-1857). Le antichità dei contorni di Roma ossia le piu famosa città del Lazio Tivoli, Albano, Castel Gandolfo, Palestrina, Tuscolo, Cora e Ferentin . Rome: presso l'autore e presso Scudellari [letterpess printed by Vincenzo Poggioli], 1824-1826. Oblong 2° (538 x 740mm). Half-title, address to the reader leaf, plate list on 3 leaves, engraved title and 72 plates by and after Rossini, comprising 66 etched views and 6 plans, one folding. (Occasional spotting of plate margins, half-title creased.) Contemporary half vellum and blue marbled boards, blue speckled edges. THIS COLLECTION OF FINE LARGE PLATES INCLUDES MAGNIFICENT VIEWS OF TIVOLI AND THE VILLA ADRIANA. Like Piranesi, Rossini trained as an architect, and his etchings have a similar tendency to emphasise the massive structure of ancient Roman architecture, showing great bridges that were still in use, towers, pillars and walls colonised by plants and trees, and giant cornerstones or rows of pilasters incongruously absorbed into the exterior walls of much later domestic buildings. Berlin Kat. 1917; Brunet IV, 1408.
