FIRST EDITION. Engraved title, letterpress title, dedication to William Roscoe, preface, 4 section titles (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and 55 fine handcolored engraved and aquatint plates by Havell after Margaret Roscoe's drawings on wove paper with J. Whatman Turkey Mill watermarks dated 1828, a few of the plates printed in blue, leaf of letterpress description for each plate. The sequence of plates in this copy is: 1-8, 17-24, 33-40, 49-55, 9-16, 25-32 and 41-5. The author was William Roscoe's daughter-in-law and was better known as a botanical artist under her maiden name Margaret Lace. Robert Havell's exquisite engravings and aquatint demonstrate his mastery as a natural history illustrator. At the time of this small production he was deeply involved in the production of Audobon's Birds of America (1827-1838) and was also preparing Priscilla Susan Bury's Monograph on Hexandrian Plants (1831-1834).
