Inscribed 11 May 1917. 1 page, folio (14 x 8 5/8 in.), facsimile of Roosevelt's signature engraved in lower margin . Boldly inscribed in ink in upper left-hand portion: "Good luck to Senator Joseph S. Freylinghuysen from his friend Theodore Roosevelt. May 11th 1917." THE OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE PORTRAIT BY SARGENT. A superb oversize engraving of John Singer Sargent's official White House portrait of the 26th President. On the day he was to pose, Sargent and Roosevelt walked all over the White House, unable to agree upon a setting. Eventually, the impatient Roosevelt planted himself next to the banister of a stairway and ordered the painter to depict him in that challenging stance. Sargent's superb standing portrait became a favorite of Roosevelt's, for it "exactly captured, in the President's eyes, the essence of his energy as well as his presidency." Senator Jospeh Sherman Frelinghuysen (1869-1948), to whom this portrait is warmly inscribed, was a fellow Republican who had just been elected Senator from New Jersey; he served until 1923.
