(Light browning). Modern red half morocco, spines gilt, top edges gilt (very minor rubbing to joints). Provenance : Sidney Gould (presentation inscription from Roosevelt on the front flyleaf of vol. 1, with additional inscriptions on the front flyleaves in vols. 2-4 and 6). PRESENTATION COPY of a later edition, INSCRIBED BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT on the front flyleaf of vol. 1: "Inscribed for Sidney Gould with the best wishes of Theodore Roosevelt, Jan 10th 1916," with additional inscriptions in vols. 2,3,4 and 6. The Winning of the West was Roosevelt's literary masterpiece. After completing it, Roosevelt wondered whether, "I have or have not properly expressed all the ideas that seethed vaguely in my soul as I wrote it" (Edmund Morris The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt , New York, 2001, p.397). The book was immensely successful, with the first edition disappearing in little more than a month. (6)
