Engraved portrait and frontispiece (small hole in frontispiece), one headpiece, one initial and 15 plates (2 folding) by ARNOLD VAN WESTERHOUT after designs by GIOVANNI BATTISTA LENARDI and PHILIP MICHAEL CAMERS. (Some occasional soiling.) Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked, some rubbing). Provenance : Henry Jardine (bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, after the first edition in Italian of the previous year. The plates include 6 views of two ceremonial coaches, 2 folding plates of a table prepared for the festivities staged for the English Ambassador Extraordinary to the Holy See, ROGER PALMER 1634-1705), Earl of Castelmaine, on his envoy to Rome on January 8, 1687 to see POPE INNOCENT XI (1611-1689). The envoy was part of James II's unsuccessful scheme to restore the Catholic church to power in England. Six plates of the various centerpieces used at the banquet. Drugulin 3239; Wing W-3702.
