ROME 1637 -- MANZINI, Luigi.
Maurizio Card. Di Savoia . Rome: Pietro Antonio Facciotti, 1637. 4 o (212 x 155 mm). Engraved title and 11 engraved plates after LUCA CIAMBERLANO after designs by ORAZIO TURIANI (third with long repaired tear crossing image, a few other smaller repairs to plates.) Contemporary flexible vellum (stain on front cover). Provenance : Biblioteca Terzi (bookplate); Aubry Vitet (bookplate). Manzini describes the lavish festivities staged at Rome at the command of the Holy See to congratulate FERDINAND III of Austria (1608-1657) upon his election as Holy Roman Emperor. Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia sponsored the elaborate festivities. Under the architect Orazio Turini the piazza facing his palazzo at the Monte Giordano was transformed into a large theater, and a triumphal arch and fountain were erected. In these magnificent surroundings lingue di luce and macchine di fuoco were displayed, together with music and dances glorifying the Austrian Emperor and poetic tributes, printed here, exalting his virtues. A number of impressive fireworks were given, on four successive evenings, mostly symbolizing, in the true spirit of the Counter-Reformation, the king's victories over Calvanists and Lutherans, as well as over the Turks. There was also the customary cavalcade in which Pope Urban VIII and all cardinals took part, and a triumphal arch erected in the Piazza Novana. Berlin 3046 (9 plates only, as in the British Museum); Cicognara 1444 (13 plates); Fagiolo, Bib. della festa barocca a Roma , 134; Ruggieri 797 (10 plates only); Vinet 664.
