ROMAN LARGE STATUE OF CUPID 1st-2nd century AD A hollow-cast bronze figure of Cupid standing nude with right arm raised supporting a cornucopia, left arm extended down to the side and fingers in gripping attitude; hair drawn up to the brow and formed into a chignon; mounted on a custom-made stand. 1.6 kg, 33cm (13"). Fine condition, cornucopia and lower legs absent. Provenance From the Rizzi family collection; acquired in the 1970s. Footnotes Images of Cupid were popular in the Roman period and are often seen standing beside his mother, Venus, or alone and acting as a decorative support of an oil lamp. Images of Cupid first began to be popular in the Hellenistic period, and it is at this time that the god takes on the image of a chubby child, whereas previously he was seen as a youth. Cupid, whose Greek equivalent was Eros, was the god of love. Armed with his arrows he facilitated romance between both gods and mortals. He also had a mischievous, and even dark side, by plaguing men and women with unwanted love affairs.
