ROMAN FINE AND IMPORTANT BRONZE STATUETTE OF VENUS 3rd century AD A superbly modelled solid cast, large standing figure of Venus with columnar base; the goddess depicted nude, with a slender physique, standing with her weight on her left leg; her hair arranged in an elaborate topknot, similar to that of the Capitoline Venus, with tresses falling past her shoulders; holding and looking into a (separately cast) circular mirror held in her right hand; a pomegranate in her left hand. 875 grams, 27 cm (11 3/4"). Superb and important. The pale green, even patination stable and most attractive, with a suggestion of possible silvering.
