He acquired mainly Italian and English paintings and was one of the first to collect early Italian art but he also amassed prints & drawings, antiquities, sculpture, Greek vases, coins and furniture, and a vast library. The sale lasted for 20 days and totalled £45,188. 14s. 3d.; the National Gallery purchased several paintings besides the three Rogers bequeathed to the Gallery.
