ROESSLIN, Eucharius (d. 1526).] The byrth of mankynde, otherwyse named the woman's Boke. Newly set forth, corrected and augmented . Translated by Thomas Raynald (fl. 1546). London: [Thomas Raynald], 1552. 4 o (163 x 109 mm). Woodcut title border. 168 leaves and 17 woodcut figures on 2 leaves (lacking anatomical engravings). (Upper corner of title renewed, A4 cropped at foot with loss of a few letters, marginal wormhole occasionally catching a few letters of shoulder notes, imprint inked out on final leaf.) Modern morocco, original cover panels preserved. Provenance : Craig-Laurie of Redcastle (bookplate). Third edition of the first treatise on midwifery published in England. The two sheets of "birth figures" appeared previously in the edition of 1540, a translation by Richard Jonas of the 1532 Latin edition ( De partu hominis ) of Roesslin's popular treatise of midwifery. Copies with the accompanying engraved illustrations are extremely scarce, and no copy of this third edition appears in American Book Prices Current for at least 30 years. STC 21155; Wellcome I:5511.
