Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Catalogue Essay Robert Wilson’s career as a theater director, actor, and set designer began when he moved from his childhood home in Waco, Texas to New York City in 1963. While attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Wilson came into contact with other like-minded designers, actors and artists for whom he would often design stage sets. Soon after attending Pratt, Wilson began producing his first original works with his company the Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds. Wilson’s landmark original productions have proven to redefine operatic and theatrical presets. Fritzi’s Chair comes from the third work of a trilogy which began in Berlin in 1979, with the second part created in 1987, and the third premiering in New York in 1999. The Days Before: Death Destruction & Detroit III is primarily set to parts of the text from Umberto Eco’s novel The Island of the Day Before and incorporates Wilson’s signature lighting style and set design.
