"ROBERT" (Portrait of Robert Crumb by MAXON CRUMB Author: [Original Comic Art] Crumb, Maxon Date Published: 1999 Description: Paint (acrylic?) on wood, measuring 10.75" x 13.75", signed on the front ("Maxon") and titled and additionally signed on the verso ("'Robert' / Ⓒ 1999 by Maxon Crumb"). Excellent condition. A fascinating portrait of R. Crumb by the artist's brother Maxon, a holy misfit who the San Francisco Chronicle described in 2006 as a "haunted, spiritually ransacked" ascetic, whose "paintings — more intricate, surreal and disturbing than Robert's antic work — sell for as much as $3,200." In Maxon's intense, frenzied portrait, R. Crumb strokes his chin as he waxes philosophical on the burdens of fame: "Fame is an implement used by society to trap and render helpless its members, so that they do its bidding. Both the celebrated and his audience, are ensnared." Like many artistic geniuses, R. Crumb's best subject is himself. But how many Crumb fans will ever get to own an original R. Crumb self-portrait? Let's face it — a portrait of the artist by his tortured kid brother is the closest most of us will ever get. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks.
