Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865) and Charles Darwin (1809-82) [W.W.WILSON and others, illustrators. Views of Parts of the Sea Coast of Tierra del Fuego. Taken on board of His Majestys Surveying Sloop Beagle 1829-30. London: Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Co and C.Rice, 1831]. Oblong 2° (327 x 416mm). 28 lithographic plates (4 double-page) after W.W.Wilson, Captain Barrallier and J.Meggett. (The 14th plate with three margins tattered or cut down, corners rounded, occasional light browning and spotting.) Original upper wrapper with lithographic and letterpress title (chips to blank margins, backstrip and spine expertly replaced), contained within a later half calf box, titled in gilt on 'spine'. Provenance : Vice-admiral Robert FitzRoy (manuscript inscription on upper cover 'Robt FitzRoy/to be kept for/reference'); Sale Bonhams June 24, 1997 lot 186. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, recalling FitzRoy's second voyage aboard the Beagle accompanied by Charles Darwin. This work was one of the first published results of the 1826-1830 expedition commanded by Philip Parker King on the Adventure and Fitzroy on the Beagle . This first expedition had surveyed a great deal of the coastline of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, and the second expedition was to continue this work and 'to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements around the world'. FitzRoy was also keen to revisit Tierra del Fuego in order to return three natives that had been taken to England by the previous expedition and to land a missionary at the same time. Copies of the charts compiled by the previous expedition as well as a copy of the present work would have been essential works of reference during this section of the voyage.
