Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) Sir Ernest Henry SHACKLETON (1874-1922). The Heart of the Antarctic: being the story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 . London: William Heinemann, 1909. Volume II only, 4 (24 x 18cm.) Plates and illustrations. (Some spotting and dampstaining.) Original blue cloth, with title lettering and vignette in silver on upper cover (spine torn away but preserved, lower cover badly dampstained, extremities worn). The provenance (Robert Falcon Scott) and battered condition of this volume suggest it may well have been taken by Scott on the southern journey in 1911. Scott took Shackleton's account of his own southern journey of 1908/9 as a guide to the route to the plateau, and tried to keep pace with Shackleton's progress as they climbed the same glacier. Volume 1, which would have been referred to continually (chapters X1X - XXV describing the southern journey and route on the Great Glacier), presumably did not survive. Erich Dagobert von DRYGALSKI (1865-1949). Zum Koninent des esiigen Sdens...Deutsche Sdpolarexpedition fahrten und forschungen des "Gauss 1901-1903 . Berlin: Georg Reimer 1904. 4 (26.6 x 19.9cm.) Original green cloth (stitching weak, some soiling and dampstaining). Provenance : Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912); by descent. FIRST EDITION. The article on the seals was written by Wilson before his departure on the first of Scott's expeditions. The "Southern Cross" expedition naturalist, Nicolai Hanson, had died in the Antarctic, and Wilson worked from his notes and diaries. Richard C. MCCORMICK (1832-1901).
