Iconic post -Civil War carbon print of Robert E. Lee astride his much loved war horse, Traveller, 16.25 x 19 in., with Miley & Son, Lexington, VA blindstamp on mount at lower left, 25 x 30 in. overall. Ca 1880s. Mount verso features the following penciled inscription: This picture of Gen Robt. E. Lee was given to Miss Mattie P. Harris by Robt. E Lee, Grandson of Gen. Robert E Lee. / He and his wife Mary lived at the Virginia College several years, with Miss Harris. / This picture was bought with a lot of other things from a niece of Miss Mattie Harris - Mrs Dorothy Buckner Albergotti, / Roanoke Va. / Stella Welch Bryant, 73713 St. SW / Roanoke Va Sept. 15 - 1937 / Stella W. Bryant / 2501 Franklin Rd. SW / March 5 - 1953. Mattie P. Harris (b. 1859) was the daughter of William Anderson Harris (1827-1895), a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute who devoted much of his life to the higher education of women. He served as President of LaGrange Female College, Martha Washington College, and Wesleyan Female Institute, where he worked for many years while raising his children. Harris founded Virginia College in 1892, which was an institution for girls. Upon his death in 1895, Harris left the ownership and management of the school to Mattie and her sister. The original school was destroyed by a fire in 1900, but it was rebuilt within a year, and continued to operate as a women's junior college until January 1930, when it was forced to close during the Great Depression. A fine and exceptionally large phtoograph of Lee. Condition: Light, even toning to print.
