Mountain Cup #9 1972 Painted and glazed ceramic; ht. 4, dia 5.5 in. Robert Arneson is one of the most provocative artists to emerge from the California Clay Revolution of the late 1950s and 1960s. While the Southern California ceramists took the medium in a more abstract direction, Arneson championed the figurative and is considered to be the father of the ceramic Funk movement (a title he did not enjoy). While modest in scale this is an important work, with a mountain rising from a shallow sea in the saucer, both charming and incongruous. This piece is number nine in a series and has an extensive exhibition history and provenance. Provenance: Hansen Fuller Gallery, San Francisco, California Private Collection, Chicago, Illinois (acquired from the above in 1974), Private Collection, Northern California. Exhibited: Chicago, Illinois, Museum of Contemporary Art, Robert Arneson, January 12-March 3, 1974. Traveled to San Francisco Museum of Art Sacramento, California, California State University, Sacramento State University Library, CA Clay, September 2-November 12, 2005. Reference: Robert Arneson. Chicago: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1974, ill. Condition: Excellent original condition.
