Beschreibung:

ROALD AMUNDSEN (1872-1928) A small collection of five photographs, [May 1912], each 11 x 80cm. approx., of the Fram (1) and Amundsen's meeting with Don Pedro Christophersen in Montevideo (4), two in individual frames, three in a common frame. Amundsen, after his lecture tour of Australia and New Zealand, had arranged to rejoin the Fram in Argentina. By chance both he and the Fram arrived on the 23rd May 1912. They were met by a deputation of ex-patriot Norwegians, including their backer. 'Now, for the first time, Amundsen met Don Pedro, who up to then had been but a distant benefactor. It was an emotional encounter. Amundsen, usually undemonstative and self-controlled, embraced the old man who... had saved the expedition' (Huntford. Scott and Amundsen p.552). [ With :] A framed half-tone portrait of Amundsen, [circa 1912], inscribed by the subject 'Don Pedro Christophersen fra hans erbodig hengivne Roald Amundsen Est. "Carmen" 28-VI-1912.' A fine association: the portrait was inscribed during Amundsen's stay at Don Pedro's estancia, where he completed the written account of the expedition. [ And :] Two other related items: a framed postcard of the pole party with Mount Don Pedro Christophersen in the background, and a framed letterpress announcement (in Norwegian) of Amundsen's arrival at the South Pole, above a half-tone picture of the pole party at the Pole, with Amundsen's description of their arrival beneath, each line of printed text with a manuscript Spanish translation beneath. Provenance : Don Pedro Christopersen; by descent. (8)
