Egerton, 1793-94. 3 volumes, 8°, half title, engraved title vignettes, engraved and woodcut head- and tail-pieces by Stothard, errata leaf at end of volume I, further leaf of corrections and advertisement leaf for J. Egerton's books at end of volume III (half title to vol. I becoming detached, margins soiled), early 19th-century straight-grained green morocco gilt (extremities rubbed, spines faded), pink endpapers, top and side edges gilt, bottom edge uncut. Provenance : The Mark Masterman-Sykes copy with coat-of-arms surmounted by the monogram MMS on sides; old catalogue entry number penned on free endpaper to vol. I; bibliographical note concerning one of the ballads inserted at end of vol. II. Bookplate of Charles Selwin. FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY. In the preface or "advertisement" Ritson calls his anthology: "A selection of English poetry, in a chronological series, from the beginning of the sixteenth century (or, including an extract from Chaucer, from the latter part of the fourteenth) to the present time, upon a plan hitherto unattempted, at least in this country."
