II printed in red. 47 plates and 2 folding lithographed maps, the plates comprising 33 woodcuts, 12 colour-printed, by Aron Kangek (vols. I-II and IV), and 14 lithographs, 2 tinted (vol. III). 8pp. of lithographed music, vol. IV with woodcut illustrations. (One map with repaired tear, the other slightly torn, pronounced spotting at start and end of vol. I, thes ame vol. with some marginal tears and pp. 11-14 detached, marginal stains in vol. II, vol. III with creasing to quire 8 and 2 lithographs detached.) A VERY RARE COLLECTION OF ESKIMO FOLK TALES, PUBLISHED IN GREENLAND, IN AN ESKIMO-ALEUT LANGUAGE AND USING AN INDIGENOUS ILLUSTRATOR. In his bibliographical note the late Juel-Jensen calls this work 'far and away the biggest and quite the most important undertaking of the little early press at Godthaab, Greenland. Its importance rests on -- this is a collection -- the first of Grenlandic tales which otherwise might have been lost with advance of "civilization" ... it is the magnum opus of that extraordinary artist Aron Kangek, the young hunter who without formal training with simple tools cut the marvellous woodcuts. The acquisition of this was one of the greatest thrills I have had as a collector'. Following the publication of Pokbogen in 1859, it was the second of three important titles printed in Greenland on the press of the Danish Crown Inspector, Hinrich Rink. Cf. J.C.
