AN EXTRAORDINARY OFFERING OF DOMAINE DE LA ROMANÉE-CONTI, RICHEBOURG 1971 VINTAGE IN BOTH MAGNUM AND JEROBOAM VINTAGE 1971 **** The firmest and, judging by my own notes, infinitely the most dependable of the '69, '70 and '71 trio, for though it has had the reputation of being somewhat hard, unyielding and 'untypical' it is these very factors which have so effectively developed the best over the past 30 years. There was some unevenness at the time of flowering and a severe hailstorm in August, affecting in particular the Côte de Beaune, otherwise the growing season was satisfactory. The weather during the first half of September was lovely and a small crop of ripe grapes wsa harvested from the 16th. The major estates and top négociants produced wonderful wines which are still delectable. As always, avoid the middle-of-the-road commercial wines. MB, Vintage Wine Richebourg--Vintage 1971 Levels: one 3.5cm, one 4.5cm; lightly bin soiled labels, serial numbers 186, 296 Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti "It always astonishes me to note how different these DRC wines can be despite the proximity of the vineyards and the same winemaking in the same cellars. At the opening Lebèue tasting in 1974, the 'roasted' Richebourg could not have been more of a contrast to the La Tâche. In 1977 it was soft and rounded, and at the horizontal tasting in 1983 it had deepened in colour (DRC wines have this extraordinary ability to take on colour with bottle age) -- in fact, the darkest and most intense of the DRC '71s, with an expansive, rich, Pinot nose and flavour. More recently, a magnum: still richly coloured but showing some maturity; glorious bouquet; sweet ingress, flavour or violets, great length. Last Tasted Sept 1990. Then ****(*) Doubtless perfection now. " MB, Vintage Wine "In contrast to another magnum tasted in the big Richebourg tasting of 2001, as here the nose is incredibly complex, indeed more complex than either the La Tâche or Romanée-Conti with incredible dried rose petal, spice and touches of sous bois followed by mouth coating flavors that deliver superb detail plus a finish that is class personified. This is drinking beautifully now from this format and should continue to do so." Burghound.com, October 21, 2005 2 magnums per lot
