RICHEBOURG, Pierre Ambroise (1810-1873) and Théophile GAUTIER (1811-1872). Trésors d'Art de la Russie Ancienne et Moderne . Paris: Gide, 1859-1861. 5 parts in 2 volumes (all issued), 2° (730 x 542mm). 60 albumen prints, the majority with arched top, ranging in size from 261 x 205mm to 305 x 132mm, in portrait or landscape formats, each with printed caption on mount. (Scattered spotting to text and some plate margins.) Contemporary green half morocco (corners rubbed, spine head of vol. I detached but present, hinges cracked). Provenance : Prince Anatole N. Demidoff, Villa San Donato (1813-1870, cypher and library stamp on half-title and section title, pressmark). FIRST EDITION. THE PRINCE ANATOLE DEMIDOFF COPY. Gautier travelled to Russia in September 1858 -- the impressions he records in this volume predate his Voyages en Russie which was not published until 1866 and the fine albumen prints by Richebourg include views of St Isaac, the Palace of Maria Nikolayevna, the Imperial Palace and Arsenal of Tsarskoye Selo, and the monument to Emperor Nicolas I. Although the title page describes the work as containing 200 plates, only these five parts (containing 60 plates), were issued. Born in St. Petersburg to Baronne Elisabeth Stroganoff, Prince Anatole participated in the construction of the railway system between Florence, Livorno and the northern boundaries and in 1840 was granted the title Prince of San Donato by Leopold II. An avid art collector and bibliophile, Anatole amassed a fine collection of old master paintings and his library numbered close to 40,000 books. S.
