Jonathan Richardson the younger (1694-1771), painter and essayist, was the son of Jonathan Richardson the elder (1665-1745), portrait painter and author. The preface to this book by father and son claims that it is the first complete account of Italian art to be written in English. Engraved frontispiece, engraved illustrations (Lacking a preliminary leaf, frontispiece tipped onto front blank and slightly damaged in consequence.) Contemporary calf (recased, new endpapers, upper joints cracked). FIRST EDITION. Pine-Coffin 646 3: "standard tour"; Wing R415. With 18 other volumes of letters and travel guides published in the 17th and 18th centuries (a few imperfect). (20)
