Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico The large, raspberry red lustrous rhodochrosite crystals on this specimen resemble the famous Hotazel rhodochrosites of the 1970s. The brilliant hue of the sharp intergrown scalenohedral crystals, which measure up to 1 ¼ inches in length, contrasts dramatically against the attractive dark matrix. A white ball-shaped ¾-inch calcite cluster in the same vug accentuates the rhodochrosites. The Romero Collection, arguably the finest collection of Mexican minerals ever assembled possessed one or two examples from this locality and this piece could easily have been included in the rhodochrosites from that collection.
