Blue straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt and blind, sides panelled, spine in compartments, marbled endpapers, vellum flyleaves, gilt edges, pink silk ribbon marker, by René Simier, with his stamp on spine of vol. I. Provenance : some early annotations washed. EDITIO PRINCEPS of this highly important collection of Greek texts on the theory of oratory, including the two major omissions from the Aldine Aristotle of 1495-98, the Poetics and Rhetoric . It also includes staple texts by Aphthonios, Hermogenes, Sopater, Demetrius, Menander Rhetor, and (ps-)Dionysius Halicarnassus. While it is surprising that, except for Demosthenes and Isocrates, the theoretical works were published well before the actual orations (in 1513, see lot 48), this may be due to the influence of Greek scholars working with Aldus, such as Lascaris and Musurus, to whom Byzantine handbooks of public oratory would have been standard (cf. Wilson, From Byzantium to Italy , p.145). Volume 2 was the last book printed in the Aldine shop before the three-year suspension of business following the rout of the Venetian troops by the forces of the League of Cambrai under Bartolomeo d'Alviano which had occurred only one week before Aldus wrote his dedicatory letter to Musurus (dated 21 May 1509). Aldus re-established his press in 1512, reprinting his first book, Lascaris's Greek grammar. A FINE COPY, RARE IN COMPLETE CONDITION.
