Two illuminated initials with floral arabesque borders (a2r, A1r), one Lombard initial in gold with brown pen-flourishing (a2r), rubricated with red and blue Lombard initials, red paragraph signs and underlining, capitals touched in red, foliation supplied in red. (Several small wormholes in first and last quires touching up to ca. 3 letters on some pages.) Purple blind-tooled calf antique, gilt centerpiece and cornerpiece fleurons, by Robert L. Lucas (corners bumped). Provenance : purchase notice dated 1486 (inscription, a1v); Scheyern, Benedictine monastery in Bavaria (17th-century inscription, a2r); Munich, Royal Library (duplicate inscription, a1r). Second edition. The ninth book of Rhazes' Liber ad Almansorem , which was popular as a therapeutic guide, circulated in independent copies or editions in addition being found with the work of which it was a part. Excerpts from it first appeared in print in Gianmatteo Ferrari's commentary, conventionally entitled Practica (Milan, before 29 October 1472), and the first separate edition was published in Padua on 8 June 1476. Syllanus de Nigris' commentary, which in this edition is printed alternately with sections of the text, was published also with the first edition. The second edition includes an additional text, the Receptae of Pietro da Tossignano, a textbook of therapeutics and materia medica following the order of the Liber Almansoris .
