Reynolds (Joshua, 1723-1792). Head and shoulders sketch of a young girl in bonnet, pen, ink & watercolour wash, inscribed towards lower margin (possibly with name of the subject), 16 x 9.5 cm (6.25 x 3.75 ins), framed and glazed (Qty: 1) With handwritten label pasted to verso 'G. Ingestre Maryon Esq, Ashby de la Zouche, Oct. 1827'. Most of the drawings and sketches by Reynolds extant derive from the sale of the property of Sir Joshua's niece Mary, Dowager Marchioness of Thomond, his principal heiress, at Christies on 26th May 1821, where over 450 drawings, and nine sketch books, were sold in a total of fifteen lots. Six of these lots were bought by Sir John Herschel (1792-1871).
