REYNOLDS, Joshua (1723-1792). Engravings from the Pictures and Sketches painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds Bayswater: S.W. Reynolds, 1820-[1836?].
REYNOLDS, Joshua (1723-1792). Engravings from the Pictures and Sketches painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds Bayswater: S.W. Reynolds, 1820-[1836?]. 4 vols., 2° (465 x 311mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait in each volume, engraved title (transcribed above) and dedication in vol. 1, and 355 unnumbered engraved plates by S.W. Reynolds (heavy browning to opening leaves of vol. 1, some persistent marginal spotting, occasionally heavy.) Contemporary russia with wide gilt borders, spines gilt, gilt edges. A WELL-BOUND SET OF THIS RARE PUBLICATION. The Graphic Works were published in 60 numbers up to 1836, "containing 300 portraits of eminent persons during the Reign of George III, and 130 historical and fancy subjects". COPAC records only one copy at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, dated 1820-26, though Lowndes and Brunet both date the publication in parts to 1836 (no plate count available). The Bibliothèque d'art et d'archéologie, Geneva, holds a copy with 357 plates (including portraits), and so in effect has 2 plates less than our copy. Some sheets contain as many as four portraits within the plate mark. Brunet IV, 1261; Lowndes V, 2079. (4)
