Be it enacted...that there shall be raised...one hundred thousand pounds.... [New York]: Printed by Samuel Loudon, 1784. Folio broadside, 23½ x 19 in. (595 x 480mm). Printed in six columns, bold heading at top. Neatly backed with linen, a few minor spots and light foxing, lower blank areas with ink computations, otherwise in fine condition. THE COST OF INDEPENDENCE: NEW TAXES TO PAY FOR THE "HEAVY BURTHENS AND EXPENSES" FROM THE WAR. A UNIQUE BROADSIDE. A previously unrecorded, very imposing broadside announcing new taxes to be levied on residents of "the city and county of New York, the counties of King's Queen and Richmond" and sections of Westchester. This fund was intended to compensate the residents and property holders of upstate counties, areas that had born the full brunt of British raids and campaigns and had been expected to furnish arms, forage and sustenance during the Continental Army's prolonged occupation. "New York had witnessed more fighting, contained more Loyalists, and had more of its territory occupied by the British for a longer time than had any other state" (F. MacDonald, Alexander Hamilton , 73). The act spells out in great detail how and from whom the taxes were to be collected, how assessors were to be appointed and other legal technicalities. A tabular chart is provided at the bottom to explain the enactment. A UNIQUE BROADSIDE, not traced in any of the standard sources.
