Whipple") as members of the Secret Committee, TO ROBERT MORRIS (1734-1806) ( Signer , Pennsylvania), Baltimore, 18 January 1777. 1 page, folio, creases repaired on verso . ROBERT MORRIS AND THE SECRET COMMITTEE THREE SIGNERS OF THE DECLARATION appear on this letter--addressed to a fourth Signer. Lee, Lewis and Whipple summon Morris to Baltimore to bring with him "the books and papers of the Secret Committee. And if the wishes of many members be gratified, it will be proper to make known what prospects we have of getting the things ordered, and for this purpose what are our prospects of remittance &c...." Congress created the Secret Committee of Correspondence in 1775, to make contact with European powers in the hopes of receiving financial, military and diplomatic support. Their work bore its greatest fruit in Franklin's treaty with the French in February 1778.
