Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of War, in 1853-5. Volume XII, Book 1 Author: ** Place: Washington Publisher: Thomas H. Ford Date: 1860 Description: Volume XII, Book I only. 358, 41 pp. Illustrated with 71 color lithograph plates, including 1 folding; 2 large folding maps and 1 large folding railroad profile at rear. (4to) later cloth-backed boards, library white lettering on spine. House Issue. The heavily illustrated first part of the final volume of the Pacific Railroad Reports, covering the explorations for the northern route under the command of Isaac Ingalls Stevens. The excellent series of lithographs reveals in color for the first time the lands explored by Lewis and Clark on their heroic trek across the continent a half-century earlier. Lot Amendments Condition: Heavily rubbed; front cover and spine detached from text block; some library markings including rubber and blind stamp on early leaves, plus bookplate, else internally very good with foxing; very good.
