Title: Report upon the Colorado River of the West Author: Ives, Joseph C[hristmas] Place: Washington Publisher: Government Printing Office Date: 1861 Description: 131, 14, 154, 30, 6, 31, [1] pp. Illustrated with 4 folding maps (2 of them tinted geological maps issued only in Senate copies); 1 engraved profile; 15 lithographed or engraved views; 7 color lithograph plates of Indians; 8 folding panoramas; 3 engraved paleontology plates; wood engravings in the text. (4to) 28x21 cm (11x8¼"), period half black morocco & cloth, expertly rebacked with original gilt-lettered spine strip employed, marbled endpapers. First Edition, Senate Issue. Superb survey of the Colorado River, with exceptional illustrations after Möllhausen and others and including reports on the geology, botany and zoology by John Strong Newberry, Asa Grey, Spencer Fullerton Baird and others. Wagner-Camp notes that "William Goetzmann calls Lieutenant Ives' complete report, 'The best by far of these individual reports... It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation....'" Warren Heckrotte notes that "Appendix D presents remarks on the preparation of the maps." The two geological maps issued only in Senate copies are often not present even there. The binding is possibly a presentation binding. The expert repair of the binding is by Sandra Good. Provenance: Golder, 6/84 References: Howes I92; Sabin 35308; Wagner-Camp 375; Wheat Transmississippi 4, pp. 98-101. Lot Amendments Condition: Occasional light foxing/offset to some of the plates and maps, but most quite clean including the bright color lithographs of Native Americans; very good or better, much nicer than generally found. Item number: 265214
