RENOUARD, Antoine-Augustin (1765-1853). Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde, ou histoire des trois Manuce . Paris: Jules Renouard, 1834. 4 o (265 x 205 mm). 2 engraved portraits and 11 facsimile plates on 8 leaves, five folding. (Some spotting.) Contemporary brown morocco gilt, edges gilt (a bit rubbed). Provenance : Edward Herbert (1785-1848), second Earl of Powis (signature "Powis" on front pastedown, manuscript marginalia). LARGE-PAPER COPY, of which only 32 were printed according to Bigmore and Wyman, of the third edition, which "has remained the standard bibliography on the subject and is a model of its kind" (Breslauer & Folter). To this edition is added the Giunta bibliography "Notice sur la famille des Junte et liste sommaire de leurs editions jusqu'en 1550." This copy with a distinguished provenance: the second Earl of Powis, with Lord Gosford, purchased many of the important Aldines collected by Samuel Butler who himself had based his collection on Renouard's. Powis's manuscript notes range from short lines next to titles (presumably indicating titles he owned) to more substantive additions of titles not known to Renouard. The Powis books were sold on 20 March 1923; the Aldines were sold as one lot and were recatalogued, with additions, by Quaritch in 1929 (see de Ricci, p. 115). Besterman III, 5153; Bigmore & Wyman II, 251; Breslauer & Folter 115.
